The AT transmission was so far reserved only for the top-spec Highline Plus and the GT TSI variants. Until very recently, the Volkswagen Polo was only available with the 76hp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder MPI engine on the entry-level Trendline and mid-spec Comfortline trims. Meanwhile, the 110hp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI engine was offered on the higher-spec Highline Plus and GT TSI variants.

Earlier in February this year, Volkswagen launched a limited Polo TSI Turbo Edition, which was based on the Comfortline trim, and brought the TSI turbo-petrol engine, with a manual gearbox, to the mid-spec variant of the Polo. Following that, in April, Volkswagen discontinued the Polo TSI Turbo Edition and replaced it with a standard Comfortline TSI MT version. Now, Volkswagen has added an automatic gearbox option to this variant.

In terms of features, the Volkswagen Polo Comfortline AT comes equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, front and rear fog lamps, a cooled glovebox, 2-DIN audio system, height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic steering, remote locking, and a rear defogger and wiper. Additionally, Volkswagen is also offering automatic climate control and a Blaupunkt music system as standard on the Comfortline AT trim. The TSI Comfortline MT variant only gets manual air-conditioning and misses out on the special music system as well.
Safety is taken care of by dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, high-speed alert and a seatbelt reminder. The Comfortline AT variant obviously makes the AT transmission on the Polo a lot more accessible, with the Highline Plus AT being priced almost a lakh more, at INR 9.60 lakh*.
For this price, the Volkswagen Polo 1.0L TSI Comfortline AT rivals the likes of the Tata Altroz iTurbo (INR 7.94-9.06 lakh)* and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (INR 7.83-7.88 lakh)*, both of which miss out on an automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the Hyundai i20 1.0L turbo-petrol DCT automatic is much more expensive, with prices starting from INR 10.68 lakh*. The Comfortline AT may be the most affordable turbo-petrol automatic hatchback in its segment, but there's no getting away from the sparse equipment list, something at which the competition is way ahead.

The friends have been providing the service for a few weeks now, and they help five to six patients in need every day. They are sourcing oxygen from variant places in the city, having to wait for hours in the queue to get the cylinders refilled. However, they are now facing trouble sourcing empty cylinders. Currently, they are trying to source the cylinders from any patient who has recovered or passed away.
These friends keep one of the vehicles stationed at the spot to ensure oxygen can be provided the moment a patient is in need of it. The youngsters are using their own money to provide help, and plan to buy a proper ambulance in the near future. With the added equipment, they expect to help around 40-50 people a day. For now, they will continue using their Ford EcoSport, Volkswagen Polo and two other vehicles.

]]>The facelifted model gets revised headlamps with new LED DRLs, redesigned grille, and a new bumper to make the front face look fresh. The new light strip on the grille is inspired by the new Volkswagen Golf and it is a particularly nice touch. At the rear, the Polo facelift comes with new LED tail lamps for which the tail gate has had to be redesigned. It also gets a new rear bumper with a diffuser-like effect. And of course, a facelift is never complete without a new set of alloy wheels.
At first glance, the interior may seem largely similar to the pre-facelift version. But look closer and you will notice elements from larger VW cars. One of the familiar bits include a new touch-based climate control stack that we also saw on the Volkswagen Taigun. Even the steering wheel with the new logo has come from Volkswagen ID cars. The touchscreen infotainment system has grown larger as well and now measures 9.2 inches.

A facelift obviously has to come with new features and for 2021, the Polo additionally gets Matrix LED headlamps, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance feature. Other standout features such as the 10.25-inch digital driver’s display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, and keyless entry with push-button start have been carried over from the pre-facelift model. Safety features include multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, and electronic stability control.
Internationally, the Polo continues with the 1.0L petrol engines under its hood. The base-spec engine is an 80PS 1.0L MPI engine. Then there's the 1.0L TSI engine available in two states of tune - 95PS and 110PS. Both versions of the 1.0L TSI engine are even available with a 7-speed DSG gearbox as an option. When launched in India, the Polo facelift could even be offered with the Taigun's 115PS 1.5L TSI petrol engine with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic.
As said before, VW India is planning to replace the MK5 Polo with this new model. It is expected to be based on the MKB-A0-IN platform to keep the costs in check while donning the same styling cues as the MK6 Polo. Well, it’ll be exciting to see the decade-old Polo getting a significant update. We reckon it could be priced between INR 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

]]>The leaked images are of the Polo R trim. However, the ‘R’ badge is not identical to the R Line badge seen on other VW cars. Talking of the changes, the facelifted model gets revised headlamps with new LED DRLs, redesigned grille, and a new bumper to make the front face look fresh. Over to the sides, the leaked images show the facelifted Polo with Golf R Line inspired alloy wheels. But the high ride height suggests that it isn’t the high-performance R Line trim of the Polo. Around the rear, the changes include revised tail lamps along with a new glow pattern. The rear bumper is new as well.
On the inside, things look similar to the outgoing model. The dashboard layout hardly boasts of any changes, except for the new logo on the steering wheel. The feature list comprises of a 9.5-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, multi-function steering wheel, keyless entry & go and more.
Based on the MWB A0 platform, the MK6 VW Polo is offered with a 1.0L turbo-petrol motor that also does duties on the India-spec car. Although, it is offered in multiple states of tunes. Also, VW India is planning to replace the MK5 Polo with a new model. It is expected to be based on the MWB A0 IN platform to keep the costs in check while donning the same styling cues as the MK6 Polo. Well, it’ll be exciting to see the decade-old Polo getting a significant update.

The teaser image only previews a small portion of the front quarter of the Polo facelift, including the revised headlamps. The updates already seem quite comprehensive from this little preview. The most notable takeaway from this teaser is a new illuminated light bar that runs across the grille and merges with the LED DRLs within the headlamp cluster. The headlamps too have been made to look much sleeker than before and feature new bi-LED lighting elements. There's even a new boomerang-shaped motif at the corners of the headlights. The grille also appears much narrower than before.

The LED light bar on the grille seems somewhat inspired by the Polo's elder sibling, the Volkswagen Golf. Elsewhere, we expect the Polo facelift to feature new bumpers at either ends and redesigned tail lamps as well. Although we haven't seen images of the interior of the Polo facelift yet, Volkswagen could update the cabin with a larger infotainment screen along with some new features. Under the hood, the Polo will likely remain mechanically unchanged, continuing with it's petrol-only engine lineup in markets overseas.
Back here in India, Volkswagen is finally evaluating bringing the Mk6 Polo to India. Perhaps it could even arrive in this upcoming facelifted guise. Like every other new Volkswagen model in India, the next-gen Polo will be underpinned by the heavily localized MQB-A0-IN platform. Volkswagen will, however, have to modify the platform to under four meters to fit into the lesser tax bracket. The international-spec model is slightly longer than the sub-four meter barrier here in India.
With the India 2.0 strategy, Volkswagen have repeatedly said that they want to maintain their premium positioning in the market. Although the next-gen Polo will be underpinned by a heavily localized platform, it's prices are inevitably bound to go up by a considerable margin. There are reports that Volkswagen could be plonking the larger 150hp/250Nm 1.5L TSI engine under the hood of the next-gen Polo in India in a top-spec GT variant. With new design, more tech and features, and of course, the new 1.5L TSI engine, prices for the next-gen Polo could very well range between INR 8-12 lakh in India.

]]>On the contrary, VW has now made 1.0L TSI engine standard offering on the mid-spec Comfortline trim alongside the existing MPI engine. The table below gives you a brief look at how the prices of each of these trims compare against each other. The new Comfortline TSI variant is now INR 42,000 more expensive than the Turbo Edition. That said, it is just INR 30,000 dearer to the Comfortline MPI variant, a bargain for the gem of an engine and performance that you get with the TSI motor.
Polo Turbo Edition (Discontinued) | Comfortline MPI | Comfortline TSI | Highline Plus TSI MT | |
Price (ex-showroom) | INR 6.99 lakh | INR 7.11 lakh | INR 7.41 lakh | INR 8.49 lakh |

The Comfortline TSI variant is also a whopping INR 1.08 lakh more affordable than the Highline Plus TSI variant. As for the discontinued Volkswagen Polo Turbo Edition, it came with a few distinctive styling elements. That included a new design for the 15-inch alloy wheels, a glossy black appliqué on the spoiler and wing mirrors, and a 'Turbo' badge on the front fenders. The interior saw new black seat covers with red inserts along with an automatic climate control system, which was earlier limited to the Highline Plus and GT variants.
Being a mid-spec trim, the Comfortline TSI variant has the bases covered as it comes decently equipped with features. That includes a two-din infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB, manual air-con, power windows, a multi-info display, and remote locking. Safety is taken care of by dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. However, it misses out on the niceties of the Highline Plus variant that additionally gets cruise control, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rain sensing wipers, and larger 16-inch alloy wheels. That also justified the differences in their price.
Under the hood, the 1.0L three-cylinder turbo-petrol TSI engine in the Comfortline Trim continues to produce 110PS and 175Nm of peak torque. In this trim, it is only offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 6-speed automatic transmission is limited to the Highline Plus and GT trims. Currently, the Polo is priced from INR 6.01 to INR 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. While the Polo Comfortline TSI might be more expensive than the Turbo Edition, it is still one of the most affordable turbo-petrol cars you can buy in the country currently.

]]>Let's address the basics first. Like every other new Volkswagen model in India, the next-gen Polo will be underpinned by the heavily localized MQB-A0-IN platform. This platform is already underpinning the Volkswagen Taigun and it will also be underpinning the Volkswagen Vento replacement in India. Volkswagen will, however, have to modify the platform to under four metres to fit into the lesser tax bracket. The international-spec model is slightly longer than the sub-four meter barrier here in India.
Talking about the engine options, Volkswagen have said that their 1.0L TSI turbo-petrol engine is going to be the mainstay for the brand as part of their India 2.0 strategy. That means the 110hp/175Nm 1.0L three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine will continue with the next-gen Polo, as will the manual and automatic gearbox options. But what's more exciting is that Volkswagen could be plonking the larger 150hp/250Nm 1.5L TSI engine under the hood of the next-gen Polo in India in a top-spec GT variant. There are reports of it even being offered with a manual gearbox. We can imagine the kind of driver's delight this variant could possibly be.

And that brings us to its pricing. With the India 2.0 strategy, Volkswagen have repeatedly said that they want to maintain their premium positioning in the market. Although the next-gen Polo will be underpinned by a heavily localized platform, its prices are inevitably bound to go up by a considerable margin. With new design, more tech and features, and of course, the new 1.5L TSI engine, prices for the next-gen Polo could very well range between INR 8-12 lakh in India. Although that's quite a premium over the current-gen model, Gurpratap Boparai, MD Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, has said the “price point needs to be higher for the Polo (sixth-gen model) to enter”.
This, frankly, does not come as a surprise given that the new-gen Hyundai i20 goes up to INR 11.18 lakh (ex-showroom) for its top-spec model. Prices of premium hatchbacks have been on the rise and the i20 was the first model to cross the INR 10 lakh mark. Prices are likely to swell even further in the coming years with increasing input costs and taxes. Currently, the Polo is priced between INR 6.01 lakh and INR 9.92 lakh, similar to the Maruti Baleno. However, it captures less than 5% of the segment's market share. The new-gen model could finally make the Polo mainstream in India despite its higher positioning, just like the new i20.

]]>On the exterior, the new Turbo Edition models get a few distinctive elements. That includes new designs for the 15-inch alloy wheels, a glossy black appliqué on the spoiler and wing mirrors, and a 'Turbo' badge on the front fenders. The interiors of both the models have also been updated with new black seat covers with red inserts. The Polo additionally benefits from an automatic climate control system, which was earlier limited to the Highline Plus and GT variants. Interestingly, the Polo Turbo Edition is INR 3,000 more expensive than the Polo Comfortline variant. The Vento Turbo Edition, on the other hand, is INR 1.3 lakh more affordable than the standard Comfortline variant.

Under the hood, the Polo and Vento Turbo Edition models are powered by the 1.0L TSI three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. This engine produces 110hp and 175NM of peak torque, and comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission only. The automatic transmission has been kept reserved for higher variants. It must also be noted that the Polo Comfortline variant comes with the 1.0L MPI engine as standard, but has been upgraded with the 1.0L TSI engine in this Turbo Edition variant.
Other features on both the Polo and Vento have been carried forward from their respective Comfortline trims. As such, the Polo Turbo Edition comes with front and rear fog lights, remote central locking, driver’s seat height adjust, tilt and telescopic steering adjust, power adjust for the wing mirrors, cooled glovebox, ambient lighting and a 2-DIN Bluetooth-enabled audio system with four speakers.
Meanwhile, the Vento Turbo Edition comes with features such as front fog lights with a static bending function, rear fog lights, remote central locking, halogen headlights, leather-wrapped steering and gear knob, cooled glovebox, a 2-DIN Bluetooth-enabled audio system with four speakers, cruise control, automatic climate control with rear AC vents and more. Currently, the Polo is priced from INR 6.01 to INR 9.92 lakh* and the Vento from INR 9.09 to INR 13.68 lakh*. The VW Polo Turbo Edition is also the most affordable turbo-petrol hatchback in the country right now, undercutting the price of all its rivals.

]]>The current-gen Volkswagen Polo has been in our market for 10 years and has remained practically unchanged in that time, expect for some visual updates and a new engine under the hood. The Polo that's sold globally (called the Mk 6) is a generation ahead and has been on sale since 2017. However, Volkswagen chose not to bring it to India as the costs would have been too high and in a price sensitive market like India, that certainly wouldn't have worked.

However, the market has evolved over time and new premium hatchbacks like the new-gen Hyundai i20 - which is priced above INR 11 lakh for its top-spec trim - has shown that people are willing to pay that much amount for what is still a hatchback, as long as it packs some value. It is actually way more expensive than what was previously considered appropriate for the segment. This is what has really given Volkswagen the nod that the market is finally ready for the next-generation of the Polo.
As mentioned before, the India-spec Polo will be different from the model that's sold abroad. Just like the replacement for the Vento, the next-gen Polo will also be based on Volkswagen's MQB-AO-IN platform. Owing to high levels of localization, it will help keep the costs low and improve affordability. The upcoming Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are also based on the same platform. Volkswagen is really betting high with this new platform and their TSI engines, both of which will spawn a wide range of VW Group cars.
Not much is know about the design and interiors of the next-gen Polo but hopefully, it will be huge step up from the current-gen car. It could actually borrow a lot of the styling elements from the global-spec Polo and that's only a good thing. Under the hood, the Polo will likely continue to be powered by the 1.0L TSI engine with manual and automatic gearbox options. We can't wait to find out how the next-gen Volkswagen Polo turns out for India. It sure has a lot to live up to.

]]>Price revisions towards the end of the year has almost become a norm in the automotive industry. Almost every manufacturer marginally increases the price of their vehicles at this time of the year or by the first month of the coming year. This price hike will be applicable only for the Polo and Vento, both of which are locally-made cars. Meanwhile, the T-Roc and the Tiguan AllSpace are unaffected by this price hike as they are come in as CBUs.

This price hike comes about due to increasing input costs across the spectrum, including input costs for steel, aluminum, plastics and other affiliated cost increases during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, prices anyway saw a strong uptick due to the transition to the BS6 norms. The lockdown and the pandemic also caused supply-chain disruptions for components and raw materials, which further contributed the uptick in prices of vehicles.
Although it has not been announced officially yet, we expect a similar price hike for VW's sister company in India. Skoda could also be increasing the price of the locally-made Rapid sedan by a similar margin. Earlier in November, VW Group's luxury brand Audi also announced a price hike across its range.
Going ahead into 2021, both Volkswagen and Skoda will be going into a product offensive strategy. The first model to come out of VW Group's India 2.0 Project will be the production-spec Skoda Vision IN which will then be followed by the Volkswagen Taigun. These two are very important products for both the brands in India. The later half of 2021 will also see the next-gen Vento from Volkswagen and the next-gen Rapid from Skoda in India.

The once-again-facelifted VW Polo GT seen here is painted in a new cherry red colour. The new car embodies subtle changes with cues borrowed from the discontinued GTI variant. It features similar honeycomb grille and a similarly designed sharp bumper. Changes include sporty underbody spoilers and tweaked tail lamps as well. ]]>The pleasant surprise is that the cars get additional features and yet a very significant slash in their price.
VW India is clearly determined to pump up the sales volumes of the Polo and Vento. The move couldn't have come at a better time because the sales had been showing a downward trajectory in the past few months.
Even though the company has not released the official pictures yet, in a statement to media, they announced that both the cars now get smoked headlamps, new alloy wheels and optional bluetooth connectivity as part of the package.
In addition, the Vento highline gets 4 speakers and a navigation system with reverse parking camera.
The Polo highline benefits the maximum in this update. Along with the above mentioned features, it also packs in goodies like leather wrapper steering, hand-brake lever and gear knob, new music system with USB connectivity, speed sensing volume control and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

]]>The current Volkswagen Polo was showcased in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show. It won the prestigious World Car of the Year award in 2011. But when we visited the Chakan plant in 2010, we learned that Volkswagen has already started work on the successor.
Thanks to AutoBild.de, we have a rendering of the next generation VW Polo inspired by the VW Cross Coupe design study revealed at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.
What do we know about the next generation Volkswagen Polo?
The next generation Polo is expected to be launched in 2015. VW India is going to make massive investments in the Chakan plant to make it compatible with the MQB platform so the 2015 Polo can roll of the line.
Besides the next generation Polo, rumors are also rife that the VW group is also planning a Compact SUV based on the Polo to rival the likes of Renault/Dacia Duster. The new Compact SUV will be a fully fledged SUV and not something like a Cross Polo. It will be available in 4X4 and 4x2 versions and is expected to be launched in 2016.

]]>Volkswagen UK has decided that from now on it will add a hands-free kit as a standard feature on select Polo variants.
Earlier the Touch Phone Kit was provided as an option for 245 euros (roughly 17k rupees). This Bluetooth-enabled kit connects to the driver’s phone and displays the Phone Book, Call History, Reception status and more information.
It also has the functionality of voice control which can be used to dial your contacts by just uttering their names. The device can also be programmed to read your text messages aloud while you are dodging your way through traffic.
Using the device is simple and it does not distract the operator. It is almost equivalent to using your stereo while driving. Though the technology is nothing new and has been available on cars for years, only recently has Volkswagen decided to make it a standard feature some of its cars.
Do you think VW India too should add this gadget on the Polo and Vento?
