The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 features a higher displacement engine when compared to its predecessor. It’s an 888cc, liquid-cooled, inline 3-cylinder motor with a DOHC. It’s mated to a 6-speed gearbox that’s accompanied by an assist and slipper clutch. Almost all of the fundamental parts of the engine (pistons, crankshaft, camshafts, etc) have been redesigned for uncompromised performance along with weight reduction.

Yamaha knows that the exhaust note is a crucial feature of a motorcycle and, thus, for 2021 MT-09, the Japanese company has redesigned the intake and exhaust system to provide its customers with a phenomenal exhaust note that suits the hyper naked character of the motorcycle.

Yamaha has also used a new lightweight aluminium frame in the 2021 MT-09. It has been designed to ensure both straight-line stability and handling performance haven’t been compromised in order to lose weight. The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 also features lightweight aluminium wheels. And to make the electronics of the naked motorcycle even more capable, Yamaha has included a newly developed IMU.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 unveiled, gets revised styling & new engine https://indianautosblog.com/2021-yamaha-mt-09-unveil-p321785 Thu, 29 Oct 2020 02:30:41 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=321785 Except for its raw power, the Yamaha MT-09 was very well known for its menacing looks, which were present mostly because of the twin-pod headlamps. For the 2021 model, while Yamaha has added more power to please the enthusiasts, the company has incorporated a new single-pod headlamp which might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

2021 Yamaha Mt 09 Rear Right
Apart from the front end, Yamaha has also tweaked the side view of the new MT-09.

So gone are the iconic and angry-looking twin-pod headlamps. What we get in the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 is a single-pod LED headlamp which is accompanied by LED DRLs on either side. While this setup does try to impart a meaner visual appeal to the motorcycle, it comes nowhere close to what the outgoing model had. What’s your take on the new design of the 2021 MT-09? Let us know with a comment.

Apart from the front end, Yamaha has also tweaked the side view of the new MT-09. The side panels are absent which let you have a glimpse of a few parts and components. Perhaps, this has been done to make the motorcycle look more raw and brutal. All this has also helped Yamaha to ensure that the new MT-09 is fitter than its predecessor. Thanks to the new aluminium frame, sub-frame, and swingarm, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 weighs 189 kg (kerb).

Combine this weight with the new 890cc 3-cylinder engine and you’ve got yourself a recipe for pure hooliganism. This motor is capable of delivering 115 bhp of maximum power at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of peak torque at 7,000 rpm. And the new bi-directional quickshifter just doubles the entire fun.

Some of the other key features of the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 include:

  • KYB suspension - fully adjustable front forks and preload and rebound adjustable rear monoshock
  • 298mm dual front discs and 245mm single rear disc accompanied by Nissin callipers
  • 6-axis IMU that offers lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, cornering ABS and rear-wheel lift mitigation
  • 3.5-inch fully-colour and fully-digital instrument cluster

The latest MT-09 should arrive in India sometime in the first half of next year.

The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 gets three colour options - Icon Blue, Storm Fluo, and Tech Black. While the deliveries of the new naked motorcycle in the European markets will start from March 2021, the arrival of the latest MT-09 in India should happen sometime in the first half of next year.

Bookings for the 2019 model have begun at Yamaha Super Bike dealerships.

For 2019, the Yamaha MT-09 comes in Night Fluo (pictured) colour option that joins the Yamaha Blu and Tech Black paint schemes on the motorcycle.

The only change in the 2019 model is the addition of a colour option. Apart from the Yamaha Blu and Tech Black, the MT-09 can be purchased in Night Fluo. The colour is the combination of white base paint with black headlight surrounds, tank shrouds and red rims. The MT-09 logo on the tank shroud gets a red finish.

The hardware specifications is unchanged. The aggressively styled fascia features a twin-pod LED headlight. Being a naked roadster, there is no wind deflector to provide solace against windblasts. Steering duties are performed by single-piece flat handlebar that gives relatively upright ergonomics while keeping the riding position aggressive enough to deliver a sporty package.

The 14-litre fuel tank gets a dual tone finish with the addition of black shrouds. The saddle is a flat, single-piece unit that is followed by LED tail light and conventional blinkers. The rear number place is installed on the tyre hugger to give the tail a compact look.

The MT-09 draws power from an 847cc, inline-three, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine that is tuned to deliver 115 PS at 10,000 rpm and 87.5 Nm of peak torque at 8,500 revs. The motor is paired with a six-speed gearbox that features YZF-R1 type Quick Shift System (QSS) for upshifts. The motorcycle also gets assist and slipper clutch. Electronic rider aids include Traction Control System (TCS) and ABS. The kerb weight stands at 193 kg.

Shock absorption tasks are performed by fully adjustable 41 mm inverted front forks. The front suspension offers adjustable compression damping in the right fork leg, and rebound damping in the left leg. At the rear is an adjustable monoshock. Stopping power comes from 298 mm dual discs at the front and 245 mm single disc at the back.

It goes head-to-head with the Kawasaki Z900, and let’s see how they perform on paper.

The design of the MT-09 follows a dark, aggressive theme.

The previous generation MT-09 entered the country’s shores in February 2016. Even though the bike had a punchy engine, its relatively conservative looks and high price-tag resulted in barely making a dent in the segment. Yamaha launched the updated version, which borrows the design language from its elder brother, the MT-10. The bike now looks much more aggressive, and is a worthy competitor to the Kawasaki Z900.

The Kawasaki Z900 gets an additional cylinder and has a 101 cc bigger engine. Naturally, it makes more 10 PS and 11.1 Nm more than the MT-09. However, the bike does not have electronics apart from ABS. On the other hand, Yamaha gets a Traction Control System (TCS) featuring two different modes as well as an off switch. Mode 1 gives minimum intervention and mode 2 offers maximum intervention, allowing you to adjust or turn off the TCS to suit different conditions and riding styles.

The Z900 is 20 kg lighter than the previous generation bike, the Z800.

The biggest difference is the price. The Z900 is a whole INR 3.2 lakhs cheaper, and gets more power. However, the Yamaha features more tech which results in being more confidence-inspiring. The Yamaha is also lighter by 15 kg, but the seat height is taller by 25 mm.

The design of the 2017 Yamaha MT-09 is a major departure from the previous generation bike; which was launched at the India Auto Expo in 2016. The brand stopped selling the previous generation bike as it was not BS 4 compliant. Yamaha has developed the 2017 version on the concept of "multi-performance neo-roadster", and has design cues borrowed from the bigger brother, the MT-10.

The Yamaha M-Slaz is the second to smallest offering in the MT-series after the Yamaha MT-125.

All three MT-series motorcycles have a similar appeal and bear the hallmarks of the Japanese brand, but each of their individualities are clearly defined. The Yamaha M-Slaz is separated from the other street fighters by its LED headlamp cluster, while the others use the conventional, halogen lamps.

The Yamaha M-Slaz, launched in Thailand, is the second to lowest model in the MT-series after the Yamaha MT-125. It is the naked version of the Yamaha R15, and is powered by the same engine and six-speed gearbox used on the super sport model. The motor is a 149.8 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder fuel-injected unit with SOHC and 4 valves, that produces 17 PS at 8,000 and 15 Nm at 7,500 rpm on the R15.
