The Mileage Challenge Activity began with a briefing session given to the participants. During the briefing session, the contestants were given guidelines on efficient riding behaviour and the route planned for the ride. This was followed by a fuel fill-up for their scooters, before they embarked on the 30-kilometre ride, covering a mix of city traffic, undulations, and open roads, allowing them to also experience the scooter’s suspension, manoeuvrability, braking, acceleration, and initial pick-up.

After returning to the venue, the scooters were refilled to match the earlier fuel level, and the amount of fuel used was recorded for mileage calculation.

While all the visiting customers were given souvenirs, a free water wash, and a 10-point inspection of their vehicles, the top 5 winners were awarded trophies, certificates, and gift cards for achieving the highest mileage.

To start with, the customer’s Yamaha scooter is topped up with fuel. After fuelling up, customers ride their scooters for up to 30kms over an identified route that allows them to test the vehicle's suspension, manoeuvring, braking, acceleration and initial pick-up. Yamaha has launched the Ray ZR hybrid range recently. The new models were revealed in June 2021 during the online launch presentation of the Yamaha FZ-X. One of the highlighting features of the new Yamaha Ray ZR hybrid scooters, as the name suggests, is the Hybrid System that the company has also incorporated in the Yamaha Fascino 125 Hybrid. Motofumi Shitara, Chairman of Yamaha's Indian subsidiary, added that the industry volume will be about 23 million in 2025, which brings the brand’s estimated market share to 10%. In comparison, the company's market share this year is 3.5%. The company plans to expand its presence with the launch of new products and morre “Blue Square” themed showrooms in the country.

Speaking about the product strategy, Ravinder Singh, the Senior Vice-President for Strategy and Planning of Yamaha's Indian subsidiary, confirmed that the two-wheeler brand will be moving away from the 110 cc segment to concentrate on the 125 cc space. Below is what Singh said at the press conference:

We are doing away with our 110cc products and are going to focus on the 125cc new range of scooters. Production of the new products will be starting in January. We are looking at 192,000 vehicles for the Fascino and 116,000 for Ray sales in 2020.

Despite the fall in the scooter demand in the Indian market in 2019, the sales of the 125 cc products in the segment witnessed positive growth. According to the data shared by Yamaha, the scooter demand fell from 6.9 million units in 2018 to 5.7 million in 2019. However, during the same period, the demand for 125 cc scooters grew from 12,64,686 in 2018 to 13,02,627 in 2019.

The 125 cc scooter range will share the engine in the exact same specification. The new 125 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, fuel-injected motor, first available in the Fascino 125 FI, pumps out 8.2 PS of peak power and 9.7 Nm of maximum torque. Both, the Fascino 125 FI and Ray ZR 125 FI tip the weighing scale at 99 kg.

India Yamaha Motor claims that the Fascino 125 weighs just 99 kg, which is at least 4 kg lighter than any Yamaha scooter retailed in India so far. Also, the new model features a Stop and Start system, which essentially switches off the ignition when the scooter comes to a standstill, say at a traffic light. The engine can be restarted by simply accelerating the scooter.

The Yamaha Fascino 125 FI features a Smart Motor Generator (SMG), a technology similar to the ACG starter motor of the Honda Activa 125 BS-VI. SMG allows a quieter start. Besides that, Yamaha has also fitted the Fascino 125 FI with a side stand engine cut-off switch. The fuel economy rating of the Yamaha Fascino 125 FI BS-VI is 58 km/l.

The Yamaha Fascino 125 FI's suspension setup includes conventional telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. Its braking system includes drum brakes at both ends or a combination of a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear.

It is safe to assume that the BS-VI iteration of the Fascino will arrive with fuel injection technology to comply with the new emission norms. The performance figures may not be drastically different from the current model, although the fuel injection system should offer some improvement in the economy. The current Yamaha Fascino, for reference, draws 7.2 PS at 7,500 rpm and 8.1 Nm of peak torque at 5,000 rpm from its 113 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled motor.

The styling cues are also likely to receive a few tweaks to distinguish the scooter from the outgoing model. The spy photographs reveal that the upcoming scooter will feature the retro-inspired curvy shape to the body panels that are also seen on the BS-IV model. The body panel at the back, however, seems to be the larger than the outgoing version.

The saddle and the pillion grab rail, too, seem to have received a few tweaks. The hump between the rider and the pillion seat seems to have been removed on the 2020 model. The grab rail at the back is a relatively simpler unit than the one seen on the current model.

The front fascia isn’t visible in the spy photographs, although we would not be surprised to see an LED headlight on the BS-VI compliant scooter. Yamaha may also add an external fuel filler cap at the back for better convenience. The scooter already comes with one of the largest under-seat storage capacity (21-litres), and we do not expect that to change much.

The spy photographs reveal new alloy wheels for the scooter. The current scooter, in contrast, uses steel wheels. We expect to see the 12-inch front/10-inch rear combination on the upcoming model. The anchoring setup comprises drum brakes, while the safety net features CBS tech. Yamaha may offer an optional front disc brake on the upcoming version of the Fascino.

Suspension setup does not seem to be much different from the current Yamaha Fascino. Thus, the shock absorption duties will be performed by telescopic front fork and a single shock absorber at the back.

Yamaha has confirmed that its BS-VI compliant motorcycle range will start to roll out from November this year, and the updated scooters will arrive in January 2020. Expect the updated models to carry a 10% to 15% increase in prices over the BS-IV range.
